Victorian water report highlights need for new sources as climate change hits supplies

 Most of Melbourne's water could come from desalinated and recycled water by later this century, a Victorian government report says.

It projects up to 80 per cent of Melbourne's water could come from manufactured sources by 2070, up from 35 per cent in 2020.

Water would be used in homes for non-drinking purposes.

The report, released last week, said manufactured water would also be used in regional homes.

The Central and Gippsland Region Sustainable Water Strategy outlines the government's plans to respond to increased demand for water.
